Example Of Cancer Project - 950 Words
Problem Statement The goal of our project is to create an interactive tool that will educate users on their risk of developing different forms of cancer based upon their socioeconomic and demographic information, and support healthcare providers in making informed decisions about cancer treatment. This is important because many patients will go to doctors without knowing their risks which leads to certain illnesses going unnoticed. This tool will allow patients to be better informed prior to attending an appointment so they can discuss issues and concerns with their doctor which will hopefully lead to earlier detection of cancer. Current Practices Modern approaches in cancer-risk prediction involve many clustering algorithms. Usingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The proportions that are returned are very similar amongst most cancer types so no significant interpretation can be made of the results. These flaws within the tool prevent the user from acquiring beneficial knowledge on the types of cancer, current risks, and preventative steps they should take. Novel Approach Our approach to classification of userââ¬â¢s cancer risks will use a larger number of dimensions to calculate risk of different types of cancers than other similar analytic techniques. The data used for this project will come from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) data from the National Cancer Institute. SEERs extensive datasets allow many different analyses to be done from general population cancer statistics (Siegel) to specific medical decision making applications such as whether a certain treatment for prostate cancer would be beneficial (Culp). Other approaches have utilized SEER datasets and supervised classification methods to develop survival prediction models for colon cancer (Al-Bahrani) and chart survival curves for different treatments for lung cancer (Owonikoko). However, these previous approaches have focused on one type of cancer and are therefore less comprehensive than the tool we are seeking to develop. We also plan to implement an interactiv e, user-friendly visualization tool that allows for quick interpretation of the results. PART 1: BRITISH COLUMBIAN WOMANS LETTER TO ROBERT BORDEN Am British Columbian lady and am writing this letter to express my concerns about the ongoing conscription of young men for overseas military services. I live in Toronto and am deeply concerned about the forceful enlisting of the military due to the failure of the voluntary military to raise enough numbers. My son is among those taken to take part in the war, and these have left me worried about the whereabouts of my son as well as his safety. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Conscription in Canada during World War 1" essay for you Create order Away from my son, the whole process is a violation of human rights. The military should be solely optional and by taking people to the military by force undermines human right. In my view, this strategy cannot be effective since some of those taken to the war field by force may be less committed and therefore your government may be doing itself more harm than good. My son received a letter to join the military camp last month. Since it was a government order, we couldnt rest though I never wanted my son to join the military. Also, this was not the right time for him to join the military given that he was in school and yet to clear his college education. Am concerned about his education and how the government could just take young men forcibly into the line. The strategy is not a good one, and the government should abandon it. In my view, this is not the right strategy to raise enough numbers for the military in the ongoing war. The military act of 1917 is a violation of human r ights and also what Canada stands for[footnoteRef:1]. This act has questionable military value, and it is likely to undermine military power. The debate over the conscription of young men to raise numbers in the military has divide Canadian people. It is evident that some French Canadians are supporting this policy while most of the English Canadians are opposed to the policy. This division in the country is likely to undermine the countrys harmony and thereby threat its stability. The enforcement of the said act violates the rights of the Canadians especially the farmers who are not willing to let their laboring sons join the military. Also, the policy is likely to sink the country into unrest as evident in the riots that broke out in Quebec, where the supporter of the war and the policy are lukewarm. [1: Cathcart, Jordan, Rebecca Macdonald, Allison McCartney, and Vince Shannon. Grade 10 Canadian History since World War I, Academic (CHC2D) Resource Pack. (2015).] It is not good for the government to ignore the consequences of the enlistment of young men to take part in the war. The conscription is a serious violation of personal freedom[footnoteRef:2]. It is not fair for the government to force people to do what they dont want to do, especially when it comes to war. This move is a serious violence of human rights and the right to make decisions. It is against the freedom of the Canadian young men to act and decide freely. Surely, it is not right to force people to leave their private lives to join the military. [2: Simon, Rita J., and Mohamed Alaa Abdel-Moneim. A handbook of military conscription and composition the world over. Lexington Books, 2011.] Also, deaths are inevitable in a war field. The thought of the death of a family member who has been forcefully taken into the military leaves the families devastated. I am always worried about the welfare of my son, who was taken to serve in the military by force. What would happen if my son dies on the b attlefield? Considering that this is my only son, I am likely to be highly traumatized and therefore the conscription effects extended to directly. The government should look at the consequences of the conscription before enforcing it. Many young men are taking part in the war unwillingly. Since deaths are likely to occur, in my view, this is a violation of their rights to live. Taking young men into the war forcefully without adequately training them risks them lives. Therefore, this puts them at a disadvantage in the war field. Taking uncommitted men to the war field risks their lives, and this is a violation of their rights to live. Also, I have noted with concern that the administration of the policy is conducted unfairly. Those taking part in enlisting the young men are doing it without considering equality with some regions being affected than other. This move is further likely to sink the country into divisions that will undermine the unity of the Canadian citizens. The process of taking the young men into the military is also faulty[footnoteRef:3]. The recruitment process is not taking into consideration the fitness of those was taken. Therefore, as much as the government sees this as a way to raise numbers into the military, the quality is likely to be adversely affected. Therefore, the whole process is likely to undermine the quality of the Canadian military and the overall security. Most of the young men who find themselves in the military like my son may not have the military heart. Surely, it is not everyone who fits to be in the military. It is possible that those taken into the military unwillingly will not be able to take instructions and functions effectively[footnoteRef:4]. Therefore, through the process, the government will surely be able to raise enough numbers but should be concerned about the quality of the force. It takes proper training and military education to build a strong military, something that is not likely to happen for t he conscripts. Therefore, it is not possible for the government and the military department to convince the parents of this people that their sons are adequately trained and fit to serve in the military. [3: Theobald, Andrew. Divided Once More: Social Memory and the Canadian Conscription Crisis of the First World War. Past Imperfect 12 (2008). ] [4: Cathcart, Jordan, Rebecca Macdonald, Allison McCartney, and Vince Shannon. Grade 10 Canadian History since World War I, Academic (CHC2D) Resource Pack. (2015).] With the concerns highlighted by the human rights activists the reason I have stated above, it is therefore important for the government to stop the conscription of young men into the military and look for other ways to raise the military number. Also, the government should let free the conscripts to resume their home and bring back those that have been taken overseas to take part in the military. The military act of 1917 is a violation of the human freedom and the right to act and decide'[footnoteRef:5]. The government should let every person make his decision freely as long as it does not affect other peoples rights. Therefore, the government should abandon the policy and embark on other policies to raise the military numbers. The government should let people to join the military as well as other government functions willingly. The government should recognize the importance of quality rather than quantity. Therefore, the military department should embark on sufficiently training the volunteers rather than take uncommitted men into the military. In this regard, I would wish the government to bring back my son so that he can continue his education. It was not his will to be part of the military. [5: Heath, Gordon L. The Protestant Denominational Press and the Conscription Crisis in Canada, 1917-1918. Etudes dHistoire Religieuse 78, no. 2 (2012).] PART 2: PRIME MINISTER ROBERT BORDEN RESPONSES TO THE BRITISH COLUMBIAN WOMAN I have noted the questions raised against the conscription of young men into the military. However, in my view and considering what Canada stands for, it is the right thing to do now given that volunteering as a means to raise the required military numbers has failed. Many people have opposed the conscription in the argument that it is against the right to freedom of choose and action. However, it is important to note that if we dont work together to secure Canada, there will be no place to access that freedom. It is important to consider the importance of something and not just concentrate on the negative side of it. Therefore, I would urge your and fellow Canadian citizen to pay attention to the need to secure this control by all means[footnoteRef:6]. In some cases, it is important to sacrifice for a better tomorrow. It is the responsibility of every person to ensure that we live in a safe and secure country, free from intimidation from our neighbor. In this respect, it is the refore justified to go into the war prepared to secure the name, legacy, and stability of this country. [6: Shaw, Amy J. Crisis of conscience: a Conscientious Objection in Canada during the First World War. UBC Press, 2009.] It is not right to concentrate on the negative side of the conscription only. It is important to also pay attention to the many advantages it brings to our country. I would like you to ask yourself one question, what will happen if Canada goes to war without adequate numbers in the military force. The simple answer is sure is, we will lose to the enemies. Therefore, it is important to raise numbers in the military, and given that volunteering has failed, the government and the military department has no option but go to conscription. Many have argued that the conscription would lead to serious divides in our country and threaten the countries stability. What the critiques of the process fail to consider is the critical part that unity plays in making our c ountry stable and ensuring that the country remains stable. Therefore, it is important to consider the benefits of a big military force. And given that volunteering have failed to raise the number, the government of Canada must be concerned about the diminishing military numbers, and therefore necessary steps are required to ensure that we solve the problem earliest possible. For now, the only way out for the government is to conscript young and able men to the army to protect the security of our country and your name internationally. Apart from ?international recognition regarding to the military power which protects the country from intimidation by foreign forces, there are other advantages of conscription which most of its critiques ignores. It is not right to ignore the role of military conscription in promoting the national unity. The compulsory military services will help build national unity in Canada through many ways which most of its critiques tend to ignore. First, thr ough conscription, our young men will train together in the military camps. Therefore, the military will bring together all the Canadians, whether they are British Canadian or French Canadian. These men will learn the military skills together and learn to work together as they serve in the military. Also, together as young men from the same nation, they will enjoy the free military training and learn together how the military life is. These will help build our military as well as the national unity, starting from our young men and then the spirit will spread to the entire nation. It is important to consider the losses Canada has made from the war. Therefore, it is important to bring our nation together during this hard times[footnoteRef:7]. Taking our young men together regardless of their background, will help them unify and serve the country for a common purpose. As the young people learn how the military life is, they will learn the sacrifices made by the volunteers to serve t he nation and maintain our sovereignty. These lessons learned from the military will help build national unity as the young men serve the nation for the common good. Learning what is required for the job will bring the citizens together as they serve the nation especially when it comes to political and cultural threats from our neighbors. [7: Theobald, Andrew. Divided Once More: Social Memory and the Canadian Conscription Crisis of the First World War. Past Imperfect 12 (2008).] Most critiques of building the Canadian military through conscription argue that the method will weaken the military through including people who are not interested in the military. They argue that this weakens the military force. I have also noted that you have raised the same issue in your letter. However, what you and other critiques of the process fail to pay attention to is how the process helps the country build a strong military force that is active. Letting the trends that have been noted in the m ilitary continue will seriously affect the nations military force regarding the numbers and therefore the capacity of it to protect the countrys interests internationally. Making it compulsory to join the military will ensure that the country has enough numbers in the military and ensure that our military is strong and active. Most people have opposed the conscription of the youths into the military but fails to consider have it makes the citizens pay more attention to the functioning of the government. Unless the citizens feel that they are part of the government, they will always feel isolated by the government functions. Therefore, it is important by all means to increase the citizens participation in the functions of the government[footnoteRef:8]. One of the means that can be used to increase the citizens monitoring of the governments functions is conscription. With the citizens expected to join the military force when a need arises, the citizens will fall closely and be more aware of the governments decisions especially when it comes to the matters of national security and national cohesion. Therefore, during this times of war, it is important to make the citizens feel they are part of the government through all means possible. For example, in your letter, you are more concerned about the security of your son. Therefore, understanding that the lives are at threat or sacrifice, you will seek to understand more about the threat of the country from foreign forces, and you will be concerned about how the government approaches such condition. [8: Brown, Robert, and Donald Loveridge. Unrequited Faith Recruiting the CEF 1914-1918. Canadian Military History 24, no. 1 (2015): 24.] People will be concerned about the security of their family members and friends in the war filed, and therefore they will be more committed to working with the government of Canada to ensure that its forces, as well as the country, are safe. This commitment will enhance national un ity and the levels of public participation in the functioning of the government. It is evident that more French Canadians have volunteered to be part of our military by looking at the ?military statistics. It is clear that the military department has failed to meet the expected number of volunteers to join the military. Therefore, by all means, we have to raise the numbers of the military forces. It is important to note that we lost a good number of soldiers in the Battle of the Somme and now it is not possible for the government to continue relying on the volunteers since fewer people are volunteering to replace them. Since volunteering has failed in Quebec, Canada have to turn conscription to maintain our numbers in the forces working overseas and those protecting our boundaries[footnoteRef:9]. [9: Shaw, Amy. Expanding the Narrative: A First World War with Women, Children, and Grief. Canadian Historical Review 95, no. 3 (2014): 398-406.] It is important to consider that most French Canadians have opposed to conscription on the issues that they have to specific loyalty to either Britain or France. These citizens of our country only feel that they should be loyal to Canada. Therefore, they are less willing to take part in the war which threats the stability of Canada and its security from interruptions from the foreign forces. Therefore, letting the volunteering process to be the only process that will raise the military numbers is likely to divide the Canadians into ethnic lines between the Anglophones and Francophone. Despite the many raised questions against the conscription, it is important to ask ourselves what will happen to our soldiers in the war field if the numbers remain that low. Therefore, it is important to increase the numbers to protect them. It is also important to understand that the longer the war takes, the more our economy and the stability of Canada is threatened. The idea of larger military force will help fasten the war and mak e end soonest possible. If will increase the number of our soldiers in the battlefield, will be in a position to overcome Germany soonest possible and therefore the war will end soon. By increasing the numbers, we will contribute to the success of our allies, and they will win the war. It is important to recognize the importance of the win to our country and the entire world. Canada has a good reputation in the war till now. It is therefore important to consider the position and not let the allies see as if we are contributing less in the military. Increasing the number of military forces to help our allies fight the enemies will help keep the good reputation we have earned ourselves by fighting on to this point. Also, it will ensure that will Canadians effectively contribute to the military since the military department has noted that there are fewer men from the French-Canadians volunteering to take part in the military. Mandatory enlistment into the military will ensure tha t Canada promotes equality among its citizens. This equality will only be seen if all groups of people living in Cana will contribute fairly to the military forces. Therefore, instead of just picking the soldiers by just Volunteering, it is important for the government to come in and ensure there is equality. This equality regarding the contribution to the forces can only happen through conscription since people from different groups cannot in equal proportions contribute to the military. Many critiques of the Military act of 1917 argue that it is against the human rights to life. Have noted that you have also raised the same question in your letter. You have raised the question whether our military is adequately trained[footnoteRef:10]. It is important to understand that when you get into a war, casualties are expected. The military department has always ensured that the soldiers are well trained before they are taken to overseas countries to take part in the war. Therefore, it is not right to judge the conscription as a violation of the right to life. The aim of the government is to take the young people to take part in the war together with our allies to protect the interest of our nation and not to die in the war field. [10: Brown, Robert, and Donald Loveridge. Unrequited Faith Recruiting the CEF 1914-1918. Canadian Military History 24, no. 1 (2015): 24.] Some qualities are good for the military. There exist specifications that the military department always feel are good. Some people have the qualities but are reluctant to join the military as volunteers. Therefore, the government should intervene to ensure that it utilizes its potential regarding the military manpower. In this regard, it is the responsibility of the government to decide who should join the military when it feels that such people fit to serve in the military. However, any person who is taken to serve in the military is given a chance to appeal the decision. You are supposed to argue your case before two judges. If the judges feel that your case have some weight, they can always decide to let you stay at home and not take part in the overseas military force. In your letter, you have raised the question of how the whole process is being undertaken. You have argued that the process does not consider the fitness of those people taken and therefore this risks their life.[footnoteRef:11] However, I find this information not right and in bad faith. The process always considers the fitness of those taken to serve in the military. The government realizes the importance of quality and not just quantity. It is better to have a military force with fewer numbers but great quality. However, it is important to remember that the number of soldiers in the war field and the reserve camps are also important. [11: Heath, Gordon L. The Protestant Denominational Press and the Conscription Crisis in Canada, 1917-1918. Etudes dHistoire Religieuse 78, no. 2 (2012).] Conscription of young people in the military is not a violation of the law and human rights as highlighted in your letter and argued by many people against the process. It is in the quest to help raise adequate numbers in the military to help our allies win the war so that we can also reap the benefits of the win. Our military force is very important in avoiding intimidation by our enemies, and therefore we must show our power on the battlefield. Therefore, it is important to consider the advantages of the conscription and not just concentrate on the negative side. It is important to weigh both sides before coming to a conclusion about the whole process. It is important to consider the contribution of the process in building a strong army, bring about equality and unity in the society as well as maintaining the good reputation of Canada since the war started . Democratic Government and Monarchy Free Essays
Democratic Government and Monarchy The types of system of government Democracy and Monarchy are different from each other. The actual founder of the modern democracy was John Locke, who argued with Thomas Hobbes, the one who believed that one person king or queen should rule. Government has been an issue throughout time. We will write a custom essay sample on Democratic Government and Monarchy or any similar topic only for you Order Now Many different governments have been established, demolished and replaced over the time, but the question is which one is better? In democracy they give the people more freedom, and more voice to choose what is best for them, however in absolute power the ruler gets to choose what is good for the people or not. Itââ¬â¢s becoming hard to decide the type of government system is best suitable for the society we live in. Monarchy and democracy both have advantages, and disadvantages, indeed; government is never established without them. Letââ¬â¢s first look at Monarchy. Monarchy is a system of government ruled by king or queen. People follow the throne; members of the ruling family. The ruler decides, and gets to choose the best for country. Otherwise, there are some punishments given to the people. The system of monarchy is been established in many places throughout the time in different places. One of the big places is England where this system is still accepted even in this postmodern twenty first century. England has had good and bad kings, queens and both. One of the kings that England had was by the name of Henry the VIII, who comes in the bad category of the rulers. Henry the VIII was a good king, however his secretive, acquisitive, and untrusting qualities lead to downfall. He went against the church in order to execute one of the sixth wives ââ¬Å"Anne Boleynâ⬠for not producing a male heir to his throne. When Henry VIII died his only son Henry IX succeeded him. When his son died, Henry the VIIIââ¬â¢s first daughter Mary, ascended the throne. She was raised as a catholic and was intent to make the entire country of Catholic, and then she earned the title of ââ¬Å"Bloody Maryâ⬠. Elizabeth succeeded her, and she was one of the good rulers that England had. Elizabeth was a beloved queen to England and ruled for forty four years. There are some advantages and disadvantages of Monarchy. History is witness that monarchy came out ahead of democracy, however the economists call it ââ¬Å"time Preferenceâ⬠. The best advantage of having a monarchy is that there is always someone higher up than the peoples elected Representative like the prime minister. The monarch has no political preference so is balanced and is able to guide the PM in running the country. Letââ¬â¢s pretend that king or queen is so fair that everything in the country runs smoothly. Then not only government, but also society would be willing to have monarchy in that country. And if king and queen govern so cruelly, then the citizens would be unhappy to live in that country and there will be revolutionary war or civil war that ruin prosperity of the country like how this happened in Nepal from 1996 to 2006. The problem with any hereditary absolute ruler is the possibility of too much power in the hands of a person unsuitable for maintaining it. History is witnessed with examples. The great roman emperor Augustus was succeeded by the likes of Caligula and Nero. The warrior king Edward I followed by the useless Edward II. The list goes on. It was great if the monarch was a ââ¬Ëgoodââ¬â¢ king or queen. But if you had an incompetent tyrant on your hands it could be disastrous. Also, an advantage is that less people in charge means less arguing, and it becomes easy to take action, instead of wasting time. Now letââ¬â¢s start with democratic system. The other government system is Democracy, is a form of government in which people freely elect their representatives to govern them. In democratic countries, what majority wants is established. The good example of the Democratic government is Rome in early renaissance. Rome had the best democratic government at this time. The element of that system of government can be found in United States. The veto system used today by the president of the United States was also used in Romeââ¬â¢s democratic system. As we can see from the government used in the United States today, where all people have right to say in the issues of country, is better for all and much better than a monarchy. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of democratic government. The democratic system can be established for changes in government without violence. In a democratic system, authority can be transferred from one leader to another by the jurisdiction of citizens of the country determines their ruling authority. This makes the ruling authority grateful to the citizen, and this serves as their motivation of freedom towards citizen, which maintains peace. The most important advantage of the democracy is that by claiming the leader citizens gain a sense of participation in the elections to choose their government. Citizens of the country feel free to voice their opinions in the process of choosing the authoritarian, and this gives rise to a feeling of nationalism in their mind. Disadvantages In a democratic nation, people have all the right to elect their leader, however mostly people do not vote due to the lack of knowledge the political scenario in their country, and this results making people wrong choices. The leaders rule for a short period of time, and this results them to focus on winning the election rather than working of their people. Every form of government system is guaranteed to have some drawbacks. There are different views about both political systems. Whether a government system is democratic or monarchy, they both serve the same purpose that is run its country. Their similarities, advantages, and disadvantages have to be evaluated carefully in order to have a good conclusion. Both governments are considerable on both sides. When Thomas Hobbes looked out of his window, he saw the entire bad things that could happen in a democratic government and he decided to believe that there should be an absolute power. On the other hand, John Locke saw the society in a good way and he believed that society should have more rights than they do. Two philosophers are so good in their work yet so opposite their beliefs helped to decide the criteria of society. World is coming into a new era, and countries with monarchy type of government are hard to establish, however itââ¬â¢s not impossible to see this system. It depends on the society we are living in and the type of government will establish which fits within the society, and this concludes that both Democratic and monarchy system of government are efficient. Picking a college Essay Example For Students
Picking a college Essay Picking A CollegePicking the right college is an important step in contributing to the outcome of a persons life. But finding the right college to suit the needs and desires of a young individual poses a difficult task. Much time and effort must be spent on deciding which college to attend. Avoid making a horrible mistake by rushing a decision and going somewhere not compatible with ones aspirations. Visit the college, ask for information, look at the courses offered, and research its reputation for education. Check out the dorm rooms and campus life. Is it a beautiful campus, or just filled with buildings? Find quiet places that time could be spent reading and studying. Also look at its strengths, along with the weaknesses. Meeting with the professors and discussing what is offered are magnificent ways to learn more about the college. By thinking with a broad frame of mind, one doesnt look just at colleges with the big names. Though these institutions may be wonderful colleges, they might not offer specific courses. Maybe the smaller, private schools with their much smaller professor to student ratios are more desirable places. Next, considering the location of the college is crucial. For instance, interests in outside sports, such as golf, should be concentrated toward the lower half of the country. Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, and Mississippi are prime states regarding golf. A school without a strong golfing program would not suit such a desire. Climate may also be a deciding factor in choosing the schools location. Some people enjoy warm weather, such as the mild temperature of California. Lying on the beach and catching some sun sounds awfully appealing. Others prefer the crisp temperatures of the north, where numerous colleges remain famous for dominating football teams. The distance from home is a major consideration. Some people enjoy having the comfort of home close by, while others are looking to go as far as possible. My brother attends the University of Evansville, Indiana, which is a three-hour drive from our house. Being a short distance from home, he is able to visit on the weekends if he wishes . Thats fun for him, because he enjoys coming back for family events and playing basketball with my friends and me. I know I dont want to stray too far from my family, although in college it is necessary to meet new people and experience living without the comforts of friends and home. College is a learning experience, setting up a person for life. Following in an older siblings footsteps, some students decide on the school their older brother or sister attended, which is not necessarily the right reason for choosing a college. Much exploration becomes crucial, setting up appointments with numerous college representatives. Settling on a college just because someone else went there can lead to an unhappy college career. Specific traits a person seeks may not be present in that college. Other people attend college with one thing, partying on their minds, which is a shame. Kids who ask around only to find the biggest party colleges are wasting their parents time and money. Why spend over $50,000-$80,000 dollars on an education, when they could stay home and party for free? Some of college is experiencing a social life, but there is a time to separate fun and studies. Bouncing from college to college is not the way to spend a post-high school career. Intense research should be put forth in locating the right college. With technology today, searching for the college that suits a persons needs should not be a problem. Many deciding factors are considered in the process of determining a college. Picking the right one is a major decision that will affect ones life tremendously.

Rhetorical Analysisi free essay sample
Rhetorical Analysis Essay The work that I chose to write about is ââ¬Å"The Homeless and Their Childrenâ⬠taken from Jonathan Kozolââ¬â¢s book, ââ¬Å"Rachel and Her Childrenâ⬠. This is a story of a woman whom Kozol calls Laura and her four children that lived in a run-down hotel room in 1985. The intended audience for this piece was pretty much anyone interested in reading this particular book. He wrote it for the general American public. I believe that Kozol felt bad for the women and their families that had to live in this government sponsored hell-hole. He describes Laura as a ââ¬Å"broken stickâ⬠and says that Laura, ââ¬Å" is so fragile the I find it hard to start a conversation when we are introduced a few nights laterâ⬠. Then he later describes her children as ââ¬Å"having the washed-out look of the children Walker Evans photographed for Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. â⬠and having ââ¬Å"dark and hallowed eyesâ⬠. We will write a custom essay sample on Rhetorical Analysisi or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page (1) Kozol also describes the hotel and the rooms that these families were living in. He seems to have a sympathetic tone. He talks about how there is sludge running down the walls, beds with mattresses that did not fit correctly, there was a radiator that spewed out hot water at the kidsââ¬â¢ eye level at any time and how this could do damage to the more than twelve hundred children living there. Kozol also brings up the fact that there are guards in the hotel, but they let the drug dealers walk right in like they own the place. Laura states, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know the reason for the guards. They let the junkies into the hotel. When my mother comes, I have to signâ⬠(Kozol 2). He brings up the fact that Lauraââ¬â¢s children do not get Christmas presents and how this upsets her. Laura states, ââ¬Å"Christmas, they donââ¬â¢t get. For my daughter I ask a Cabbage Patch. For my boys I ask for toys. I got them stockings. â⬠(Kozol 3). She feels bad and the fact that Kozol dedicates an entire paragraph to it, tells me that he feels for these kids and their parents. Kozol also discusses the fact that Laura is illiterate and how this affects their daily lives, such as Laura having to spend more money on groceries due to the fact that she can only buy the products with pictures on them. Also, he talks about how she has trouble looking for a place to live, which is required by the welfare system because they pay her rent, due to the fact that she cannot read the newspaper. The fact that Laura could not properly care for the health of her children seemed to bother Kozol as well. There are several occasions during their interview where Laura asks him to read letters and most of those letters are about how she needs to bring her oldest son Matthew in for treatment for lead poisoning. There was also a letter telling her that her daughter has scabies. Overall, this excerpt has a sympathetic tone. The way he describes the hotel and the things that these families have to deal with tells us that he feels bad for them. Kozol is a very credible writer for this particular story because he is directly interviewing the people that live in this hotel. He takes what these people tell him and what he sees with his own eyes, such as the way the rooms looked, and lays it out. Kozol was not only trying to get the audience to feel sorry for these people, but trying to educate the American public as well. He wanted to let us know that there were, and still are, people right here in America having to live in places like Martinique Hotel. He also was letting us know the reasons why certain people have trouble getting out of these kinds of situations, once they get in (i. e. the fact that Laura was illiterate). At the very end of this excerpt Kozol asks Laura how she relaxes. Laura replies that she ââ¬Å"turns out the lights and lies down on the bedâ⬠. She also talks about how the room is gloomy with no pictures or flowers and how she wished that she had a dog. She states, ââ¬Å"A brown dog. Something to hugâ⬠(Kozol 3). This shows us that wanted this pet so badly that she has thought about every detail, even down to the color of the dog. The last few paragraphs had a somewhat different tone than the rest of the excerpt. He seemed to be feeling down and depressed for Laura. He describes how there is a ââ¬Å"spindly geranium plantâ⬠in the window of Lauraââ¬â¢s room and how ââ¬Å"the blowing snow hits the panes and blurs the dirtâ⬠(Kozol 3). It just seems that the reality and sadness of the situation are really setting in. The detailed descriptions, such as when he describes Laura and her children, as I mentioned in paragraph two of this paper, that Kozol puts into his piece also help him to set this sympathetic tone. Kozol is also very descriptive about the way the hotel looks and the management of the hotel. He wants us to be right there with him, Laura and her children. He wants this so that we feel what he feels for her and also to feel what Laura is feeling. On a personal note, I would like to read the rest of this book and possibly other works that Mr. Kozol did. In discussion with other classmates, I discovered that he did a lot of work with homeless and illiterate people. I do not know if he still writes, however, I would like to do some research and find out how long of a time period he did write for and compare some of the stories to see if and how situations changed over the years.

Janis Joplins Porsche essays
Janis Joplin's Porsche essays Janis Lyn Joplin was born on January 19, 1943 and died in October 1970. She climbed to the peak of her success during the 60s, a time of chaos, revolution and excitement. It was a turbulent an colorful period of social change in the country, where America was ripped between those who died for war and those who carved for peace. An era of baby boomers, drugs and rebellions, young adults fought for their beliefs and views to be heard in the society. They expressed themselves through rallies, uprisings and music. Janis Joplin expressed her opinions through her music and her 1965 Porsche that Dave Richards painted for her. Her car represented symbols that both defined her as an individual and the period in which she lived in. When looking at the car, one is mesmerized be the bright colors and the great details that can be seen. Dave Richards used vivid colors like yellow, orange, pink and turquoise. The cars hood has varieties of butterflies and small blue flowers (might be Forget-Me-Nots flowers). In the middle front, there are two faces, one looking to the right and the other to the left. In the middle of the two faces, there is an eye looking straight ahead. It is a gods-eye symbol that the band has identified with. On the right side of the front of the car, there is an image thats very hard to make out. It might be a womans body with veins running through it or thin rivers of blood. On the front left fender there is a Big Brother portrait. On the left side of the car, there are little brown shapes. The impression that some may get is that it is a wall. On the same side of the car, there are drawings of mushrooms. In addition, theres a drawing of people in love. On the back, theres a U.S flag with stains of red paint on it as well as two faces united with a rainbow. Richards also painted a sun face with the Capricorn symbol on it and a letter J. On the right side of the car, t...
